Has anyone bought anything from them? My husband was approved online, we havent talked to anyone from the store yet, we wer just in there looking around. Do they require a down payment, how does their credit work etc. Would you buy from them again?

Tee C --- 13 years ago -

USA Discounters (and their ilk) are just not my cup of tea. If you purchase from them using cash, they are horribly overpriced; if you purchase from them on credit they are even more overpriced. In my humble opinion USA Discounters should be the last resort to make a purchase--meaning, you should only use them if you are in dire need and your credit is very poor so you have no other option.

If you do decide to use them, make sure you ask them what their total price would be with no interest fees (in other words, how much it would cost if you purchased in cash); then, take a look and see how much it will be total when they add in the interest and other fees. You may change your mind.

There are plenty of other places with honest financing who won't rip you off with interest, and won't charge you an arm and a leg for the "privilege" of buying their furniture.

K-mart has layaway and they have some nice furniture. I would stay away from USA Discounters and Rent to own. They are all way over priced and you have the fear of repo over your head.

hm ok

Avoid buying furniture on credit. By the time all is said and done you'll end up paying for two couches with interest and only have one to show for it. Just save up for a couple months instead.
We got our couch from Ashley Furniture for about $300. It's pretty nice.

Are we done yet --- 13 years ago -

I agree avoid buying furniture on credit at any furniture store. The interest is through the roof. Its like 20+ %. If you can afford a monthly payment then you can afford to take that monthly payment you would be paying on furniture and just save it for a few months to buy it our right.

We went through a similar situation. This year we took tax refund and paid off omni and pioneer loans. So we had no money left after paying those off but we wanted new furniture because we have come down on orders and we don't want them shipping a bunch of particle board furniture and metal frames with glass over to germany. It probably wouldn't make it through the move. And now that our kids are older we need new furniture its been about 10 yrs ago since we bought our stuff. (before kids were born) So we looked into the military club. It was going to be a almost 400 dollar payment a month for couch, dinning table and a bedroom set. Well we just got out of a 500 dollar a month payment for personal loans i dont want to start up a 400 dollar payment. So we called our bank USAA to see about a personal loan. They told us its high interest and talked us out of it but told us we only have 6700 left to pay on our car but its worth 15000 so we refinanced they paid off the car loan put the remainder into our bank account and that's how we got our new furniture and got twice as much stuff then we would have through the military club. Just a thought. Our car payment only went up about 150 a month VS adding a 400 dollar furniture payment on top of what we were already paying on the car. And we dont have that high interest rate.

Which we have yet to get all our furniture from Ashley's suppose to be in this week I HOPE SO it was about a month and a half ago that i ordered this

I definitely wouldn't ever recommend buying from a rent-to-own place. They can say they're "not" a "rent to own", but technically they ARE. They are WAY OVERPRICED and IMO there are WAY TOO MANY within military installations. I'm am mainly from Topeka and this area is quite smaller than Topeka, yet they have WAY more rent to own / in store finance furniture stores than Topeka will ever have! To me they're just a big 'ol rip off! I'd advise anyone looking to buy from any place like that to just put some money in savings / put aside some money to save up for a set of furniture elsewhere or find a cheap nice used set.

I agree 100% with what you said! Definitely just put that money aside and save up :)

No matter what your situation, I wouldn't get sucked it to the whole "pre-approved" "military approved"and beware of those places.

Furniture Warehouse in Manhattan will give you 90 days free interest on your furniture. you pick out your furniture, pay them 1/4 of the total price and take it home or have it delivered that day, you give them 3 post dated checks and they cash one every 30 days until it's paid off. they dont charge you any extra to do this. we've gotten a few things from them using this and i like not having to shell out so much money at once for a big purchase if it's not going to cost me extra to use this service.

notsue --- 13 years ago -

I've always been the type to pick up nice thift shop finds to fill in the pieces of furniture I'm missing... and then at tax return time or other times when I get extra money I then buy the furniture I really want, for a very fair price.

With them, I was actually surprised at the quality of the furniture. That's where my husband and I will be purchasing our furniture from when we get a new living room set. I like that they allow you to make payments (only for a few months, not 12-36 months like ripoff rent to own places). Their prices are really great too so if you set aside money for just 2-3 months you'd be getting a really nice set :)

Ashley furniture uses the exact same bank for their financing that USA discounters use.

wifey9089 --- 13 years ago -

I'd just like to clarify that I did not finance my couch at Ashley furniture. Bought it in cash.

BadLuckMommy --- 13 years ago -

I agree. I wouldn't finance anything with them. Their interest rates are through the roof. I would stay away from places like that. If you notice, most if not all of their stores are built right outside military bases. They target military because they have a secure paycheck.

Exactly! It's crazy how many people really don't take the time to actually calculate the total or to just have the common sense to NOT go to those places. I've heard so many excuses like "we'll never have enough to buy it all upfront in full", "we got a good deal" Sorry, IMO anything at a rent to own or similar place IS never a good deal.

Tee C --- 13 years ago -

Also, didn't someone here say they went into USA Discounters just to see what they had to offer (and to pay cash), but the pushy saleswoman said, "Why not finance; then you can use your cash for other things :D!" Big, red flag. They're pretty much car salesmen; they work on commission, and they will say/do whatever it takes to get you to sign on the dotted line.

Yup, that was my family. We wanted a leather couch and loveseat with recliners and they tried to push us into financing when we clearly wanted to buy it outright. When asked the price it was double then what another store had it up for. Amazingly we went couple buildings down and got the same Lane leather set for almost 1k cheaper.

Ahhh, I see.

Pioneer Services has similar tactics. I saw beautiful bedroom furniture in a Pioneer Services store in Northern Virginia, so I went inside to check the price. I'd just come into a windfall of money so I had no problem paying cash; when the woman told me the price (nearly 4 grand) I laughed so hard I almost drew a crowd. Yes, that was the no interest price; I pity whomever falls prey and pays interest, because for that price that set had better walk, talk, and serve me ham and eggs breakfast daily. LOL.

Nebraska Furniture mart has a 0% for 24 months line of credit and it is in house. Delivery is cheap here too. If you must finance, then go with then and pay it all off before month 23, otherwise you will have to pay interest that has accumulated.

mysoldiershot --- 13 years ago -

Neither me nor my husband have any kind of credit and we are trying to build some. We bought a table there that is 799 and their lowest interest rate is 0% and the highest is 24% we got a 8% interest fee and 12 months to pay it off.
What kind of credit do you have to have to get a Nebraska furniture mart card? We went to Ashley's but they want 23% interest. It's so hard to build credit when you have none so since USA reports every 30 days this will help

wifey9089 --- 13 years ago -

Financing furniture won't do much for your credit. It's just too little. If you must build credit, get a used car with a USAA loan. Their interest rates are pretty decent. My DH had one car loan and paid it off 3 years early and now his score is in the 700's. You wouldn't believe the credit card offers he gets.
But we're weirdos and don't believe in credit cards. If we don't have the money up front, we either save for it or don't buy it. The car loan was something his mom convinced him to do before we were married and ever since we've paid everything in cash. It's nice not to have payments hanging over our heads.

Are we done yet --- 13 years ago -

I know the feeling. We had a hard time when we were 19 trying to get a car loan. And we finally got someone to approve us then we went from no credit to bad credit because bills ended up in collections (not the car other bills) Finnally got those paid off in 08 and both of our credits are in fair condition now. But I was told by a the realitor when we recently bought our house if you get any kind of loan or credit card or anything you want to make sure you have that loan for over a year. Because if you pay it off before a year is up then you are actually hurting your credit because you didn't give it enough time to start building your credit. They actually suggest if you do something like that to have it a minimum of 2 years. Something to think about before going out and doing something like that. I would rather get 1 credit card (if you can get approved) and use it for gas and pay it off or something to help build credit over going and financing furniture through a furniture store.

UGrewInMyHeart --- 13 years ago -

My husband and I are the same way :) We will never get a credit card; only one we currently have is that darn Military Star Card, because he had that prior to us getting together. It's paid off, but it is good to have in case he needs anything work related (only!). Recently we had buy close to $500 worth of uniforms / work stuff for him and we paid it off the following payday :)

UGrewInMyHeart --- 13 years ago -

I agree. That's another "selling tool" rent to own and similar stores use to get people to buy from them. Sad thing is, those are one of the TOP places that will end up harming your credit instead of helping. I actually saw a article recently on the top things that hurt your credit and that was at the top of the list :/

BadLuckMommy --- 13 years ago -

I wouldn't suggest a credit card to build your credit. The high intrest rates and crazy fees that come along with a credit card could potentially hurt you rather then help you. I would suggest opening an account at a credit union and taking out a loan. Let the loan mature (depends on the credit union) and then come tax time pay it off.

My husband and I have never had a credit card and because we has some financial advice we started to take out a loan at a time. We took out a thousand dollar loan and used the money we got to pay the loan off over time. I know it sounds stupid, but now the husband and I have good credit and it didn't come at the crazy price of all the high intrest cost and other fees associated with credit cards.

wifey9089 --- 13 years ago -

BLM, that actually sounds pretty genius. I never would have thought of that. Using money from a loan to pay off the exact same loan? Awesome!

BadLuckMommy --- 13 years ago -

My husband and I attended a credit building class and thats what was suggested. I would have never thought to do that. It does take discipline..lol. They also said to use loans opposed to credit cards to eliminate the crazy fees. Its worked for us.

credit score = i love debt score!
you can buy a house with no credit score they do it off refernces and you job patterns. taking out to pay it off with the loan money is kinda weird. you borrowed money and then paid intrest on the money how did you get ahead? in my book thats a loss

BadLuckMommy --- 13 years ago -

Compare it to Credit cards, then ask yourself what APR rate you got. You will get a better APR rate going with your bank or a credit union. you get ahead by gaining credit and doing it cheaper then getting a credit card.

Also Credit is not used just for buying a house. It goes for cars, furniture, anything you are trying to finance....even phone companys and jobs check your credit. Its more important then people think.

Penny Lane --- 13 years ago -

there is a differance between no credit and bad credit, if any of those place checked you credit report and found you had no credit because you paid cash for every thing they can not hold it against you.
