People are making a big fuss over the fact that they said "no pork". If my kid was in this school the pork issue would not be my first complaint. What I would want to know is why my child can only snack on certain name brand food. If my kid wants Walmart pretzels then who are they to tell me NO because it has the wrong name brand on the bag. Same with popcorn and crackers. I will give my child a healthy snack and perches what ever name brand I want. What do you guys think? What if your kid came home with this list? 

They can shove the brand names up their... That's just a good way to get me to not send anything. 

I can understand the brand thing......they chose brands that do not have a disclaimer on the package that says, "processed in a facility that processes nuts, milk, soy, ingredients, may contain traces." Or something to that regard. If they have severe allergies in the class for a student then they have to accommodate. Walmart processes all of their food products in a facility that has common allergens. 

But honestly, if I go buy a bag of WalMart pretzels and put them in a Ziploc, who is going to know? 

Nice try saying only those brands listed are allergy free. Because this is what I found.....

The disclaimer is not all that legible via my iPad, but is this more of a Kosher issue? I see a lot of and/or on that list. Where is this school located?

If I took issue with the pre-approved list, I would speak with the teacher(s)/school: "Upon receiving this list, I did a bit of research and found x,y,z to meet your guidelines. Would it be alright if this is what my child was provided for her snack option?" If there is a legitimate argument to be made, make it; with the right people and in a civil manner.

A young teenager, a physician's daughter that was oh-so-careful about what she came into contact with, just died after having a Rice Crispy Treat she didn't realize had icing that contained an ingredient she was allergic to in it. It's tragic; it was preventable and not adhering to those stringent rules took this family's child.

I worked with a child severely allergic to peanuts. If I had a peanut butter granola bar at breakfast or PB&J at lunch and then touched his desk in class, and he touched the desk, he would have a reaction, so I avoided eating peanut butter for an entire year. But did the 750 other students in the school avoid it? No, and you cannot dictate what they do outside the classroom.
Yes, limiting snacks to these brands decreases the risk, but so would having students wash their hands and desks - in the case that a child in the room was that severely allergic. Not sharing snacks would avoid most problems, including the accident with the physician's daughter at camp eating a Rice Krispy Treat containing peanut butter. 

My grandson has a severe peanut allergy.. he carries an epi-pen everywhere he goes... he is only 4.. there are a lot of things at Aldi's which is not name brand that he can eat.. that is the main place my dil shops... we are very careful as to what he comes in contact with in our house, so I don't think it is any big deal to request that certain things be brought for snack... and by all means, if you can find something without the disclaimer, then us it... but if it has the disclaimer, then don't... you could be putting a kids life at risk... and you would not like it if it was yours with the peanut allergy... 

My point was why limit it to these brands only. They were very clear in the letter that these were the only approved brands. Like Proud Wife said if I can find a brand that says it's nut and allergy free then I should be able to send it. Who is the school to dictate what I can and can't feed my child. Please don't think I don't understand the allergy thing. I have a son who thank God outgrew his food allergy's. 

Personally, I think if the school is going to be that strict with snacks, then they need to provide them, not offer a snack time at all, or some arrangement where each students family sends in a small fee to cover the costs of snacks. 

1, I agree, provide them yourself if you wanna nit pick.

2, Instead of naming brands, be specific about the allergy information

3, There are more kids that don't have allergies than those that do, why cant the kids with the issues just know to not eat stuff and bring their own snacks from home. (Yeah, insensitive I know) 

I take huge issue with the fact that they said no pork. The only thing I can think of on that is that they might have Muslim students and they don't eat pork.

I think it's pretty stupid that you can't bring something as a snack because one student won't eat it or can't eat it. If it's a life or death allergy issue and the student can't even be in the room with it, that's one thing. But I think otherwise you should have the option of sending 1 thing on the list AND whatever the heck is your kid's favorite snack. Just because one kid can't have something or 2 kids can't have something doesn't mean your kid shouldn't get to bring his favorite treat for his birthday or whatever.
