Anyone else bought a kirby? I bought one yesterday and used it for the first time today. so far I like it and that it picked up alot of stuff that my old vaccuum didnt. How do you like it?

wifey9089 --- 13 years ago -

We almost bought one, but in the end I was glad we didn't because after the salesmen left, the carpet that they had shampooed in the demonstration was really crunchy. I wasn't impressed.

I did like the regular vacuum part of it, but we didn't have the cash right then and there,so we didn't buy it.

I also was slightly suspicious of how low they were willing to go on the price. It went from $2800 down to half that, all the way down to $500. It just made me wary. They kept saying it didn't matter how cheap they sold it for because they were trying to win a contest. But the whole thing just seemed odd.

I mean, if a product is worth at least $1500, why would you let your salesmen sell it for a third that price? You would lose so much money! I know sometimes companies will sell one product at a ridiculous discount just to get people in the door in the hopes that they'll buy more, but the Kirby comes with a lifetime warranty and no extra accessories, except the shampoo attachment, which was included free. So it would be a one-time buy, they'd never have my business again.
It just didn't make sense to me.

Side note: My mom has a Rainbow, which I guess is Kirby's competitor. I LOVE her Rainbow and we're actually saving up for one. It sucks all the dirt into this container of water, so no dust particles can get back out into the air as you vacuum. And you can add essential oils to the water, which makes the house smell amazing as you vacuum. The only icky part is the dirty water after you're done. And god help you if you vacuum and forget to empty it for a couple days. The smell...yuck!

I have Kirby and not had any problems with mine. Before I got mine I was having to get a new one just about every year as they stopped working as well as I liked and Ive not had that problem since.

Did they not vacuum after the carpet dried? I know my carpets will feel like that before I vacuum it right after it dries.
We bought our kirby 2 yrs ago and luv it. We have very light colored carpet in our bedrooms and it is the only carpet cleaner we have had that can get them looking like new again after shampooing.

No, I guess they were in a rush to get out of there once they figured out we weren't going to stop saying "no thank you" over and over.

We have one and I love it! Have had ours for ten years! My stepmom has had hers for almost 25yrs! They have a lifetime warranty too. I have had mine serviced a few years back and I think I paid around $30.

@ wifey Kirby is always doing contests and stuff to try to win trips. My sister worked for kirby for awhile and my mom and sister felt that they needed to buy one to help her out. Well She did reach the amount of Kirby's she needed to sell but the screwed her over and didnt send her on the trip (idk where the trip was too but i know it was somewhere overseas) Needless to say she quit the job shortly after she got screwed over with the trip.

As far as kirby themselves. My mom didnt like it but she didnt like how heavy it was. My sister, my fried and my step mother in law all love their kirby's. Now my friend does not like the carpet cleaner part of the kirby she uses hers strickly for vacumming only. She has a carpet cleaner besides.

militarybrat --- 13 years ago -

At Wifey- we got ours for 1500 which is not bad. and we got all the extra attaches to it besides just the shampoo part. we recieved all the little extras for the vaccuum itself plus extra bags and a starter shampoo for the carpets. but I guess who you go with becuase the lady that did ours said all that came with it and then when you need more or want different parts you have to order it.

brat82 --- 13 years ago -

I have a kirby and absolutely love it! i love the attachment to clean the beds with. my carpets arent crunchy maybe to much soap or something, it really deep cleans tho. it is for sure worth it in the end!

BusyMama --- 13 years ago -

Nothing against Kirby. Years upon years ago my great-grandpa was actually a salesman for them. But, I just bought a Dyson and felt sick spending that much $ on it so I couldn't even fathom spending $1500 or more on one! Yikes! That thing better be able to fly me to the moon and back for the cost! My Dyson has a 5 yr warranty and is super light and I didn't have to sell my kidney to afford it :/

I know it was probably just a sale thing but they said that the people across the street from me had a dyson not that old an they got her sold on a Kirby. When they came today they didnt tell my husband that they were kirby salesmen. So my husband was thinking oh free carpet cleaning we will give them the worst room in the house to do ya we can do that. Well guess what it was the Kirby people when they came back to drop off the guy. When they brought in a Kirby box my husband is like OHHHH. But he did sell us on it with attatchments tho for a decent concidering it started out at almost 3300 and just went
down from there.

wifey9089 --- 13 years ago -

I would definitely recommend to everyone to keep saying you aren't sure and it's a lot of money, etc when the Kirby people come. Like I said before, by the time they left our apartment the offer was down to $500 cash. So you could save a ton if you really hold out and act like you want it but aren't going to spend the money.

~*Kandice*~ --- 13 years ago -

I paid like 150 for my bissell and it lasted for almost 7 years, 3 of those years it was used to vacuum up Husky hair so it was USED a ton. I could never spend 500 or more on a vacuum. I just bought another bissell when my old one died and Love it. If I ever spend craziness on a vacuum it will be on a Rainbow.

Cookie --- 13 years ago -

I think I've mentioned my family owned a Rainbow when I was a kid. Question, though: are these Kirby salesmen going door-to-door on post; or, do ya'll live off post?

Are we done yet --- 13 years ago -

militarybrat --- 13 years ago -

Im guessing that the people who buy kirbys are the type of people who like to live beyond their means. Why would you pay so much for kirby when you can buy a bissel or eurkea cleaner for cheaper and does the same job...it's crazy. Call me out but im sure you could spend that money on other debts heres an idea..SAVINGS/RETIREMENT!

I have had a bissel, eureka, dirt devil and a kirby so i can make a judgement based on cleaning performance and i feel they do clean better and if you dont have one how can you judge the long term usability of one. I didnt pay what they ask for mine and I dont live beyond my means so try not be grouping people if you dont know all the facts. if you dont care for the brand a simple "i dont like it" is fine not judging people who choose something other then what you would do or how they would spend their own money ..but thanks for you input

BadLuckMommy --- 13 years ago -

Wow. I'm glad because I bought an expensive vacuum I'm living outside my means. The money I spent on my Dyson is money I have saved from buying and replacing the hoovers, bissels, and Eurekas every year. SO technically I saved money. I'm glad you seem to know everyones. Financial status though...whew maybe I can quit stressing so much.

I use to think the same thing untill i got the demo the other day. I have had many different brands of vacuums but nothing compares to the Kirby. I told my friend when she bought one off ebay for 800 that she was crazy. Now i see why she likes it so much. She has had it for 5yrs and has 5 kids and 2 dogs. If she would have went to the store and bought a bissel, Eureka, Dirt devil or any other brand it wouldn't have lasted she would have already had to replace it a few times. But her Kirby the only thing she has ever had to replace is the belt. And she went out and bought a Kirby without even seeing a demo or hearing anything about it. As my sister says they are built for life the only thing you will have to do is get it lubed and maybe replace the belt.

I think that is very judgmental. If people want to spend whatever on a vacuum then its their right to and nobody can say other wise. I personally dont want one. I have been happy with the vacuum I have. My husband always says if you are going to have to deal with it everyday might as well spend the money and get what you want so that that task is less of a pain in the butt. I personally have had good luck with Bissell but if I kept having bad luck with regular vacuums then I would have no problem with spending the extra to get a vacuum that last. It's more cost effective to get one that cost more and last than to get a cheap one and replace it every year.

Kandice we are on the same exact page. You said it better..lol mine was just sarcasm at its best..lol

I grew up with a Kirby that was constantly being serviced. My parents eventually threw it out because they were always spending so much money on it. They bought me a vacuum 12 years ago, a $60 Hoover and it is still awesome. I use it everyday too! They have since downgraded to a $100 vacuum and are so much happier and less maintenance. And the kirby, after being used for several years had completely ruined the carpet and they had to replace that too! Moisture would get trapped between the carpet and the floor and cause soft spots in the flooring, it also wore out the carptet fibers and you could see areas that lost their color. My parents contacted Kirby and they told them that for the enviroment we lived in with long winters and for having a dark high-end carpet with a carpet pad underneath that the vacuum had not been tested on that. So lets hope they have since changed and have done some quality control tests.

notsue --- 13 years ago -

My mom has had a Kenmore for freaking ever (15+ years)... and I can count on one hand the number of times she's had to have it serviced. I'd buy one if I could justify spending 200-300$ on a vacuum. I think I spent just less than 100$ on my Bissel and while it still works just as strong years later, there are things I hate about having a bagless vacuum. One day I will treat myself to a new vacuum and it wont be one that shows up on my doorstep. You realize that you can go to department stores and have them demo the different vacuums for you... you arent stuck picking up a mystery box and hoping it works out for you and is as quiet as you wanted it and whatever else you expect. Waiting around for the Kirby man to show up just because you've never seen any other cleaner properly demonstated is no excuse to pay that kind of money for one. I had a friend ages ago who swore by Kirby, he had one and loved it, and I used it a number of times... but I dont want one, its just not worth it to me. I'm also not sold on Dysons long term performance.

Hope (Mod) --- 13 years ago -

Some people don't like the weight of a Kirby if they have stairs. Everyone has features they like in a vacuum. I tried a bagless and I didn't like all the cleaning tubs/filters some don't mind it. I think its just a personal preference. I don't use the shampoo part of my Kirby so I don't have the floor and moisture issue. Its just been years of trying different things and I happen to like the Kirby it works for me and if you enjoy yours and it cleans well enough for you then I say that's the right one for you. Some houses have different carpets that some work better, some have not as much carpet and have wood or linoleum. If you don't care for the Kirby then I wouldn't buy it either but I wouldn't change having mine and it works best for me then any I have had.

Tee C --- 13 years ago -

My older sister has a Kirby because she used to sell them and basically got it for nearly free. It has been a while (about 20 years) since she got it but I am still so impressed with the fact that not only is it still working, but it's working exceptionally well.

I had a regular old Bissell for about 7 years. I paid roughly $75 and it worked well until it just slowed down and didn't pick up like it used to--so I bought another Bissell. It worked phenomenally; I only paid about $110 for it but the suction was so powerful that I could see the carpet jumping off the floor, lol. Well, hubby vacuumed the home theater/man cave with it and it started making noises like a wild tiger, lol. So, long story short, he bought me a Shark Navigator to replace the Bissell and so far it has been exceptional. It was roughly $200.

I think that if or when the Shark ever fails I will just go for the gusto and get a Kirby. I have heard both good and bad things about Dyson, but the 5 year warranty made me leery about buying one; since Kirby has a lifetime warranty though, that won't be an issue.

First it is not living outside your means. you dont know on this page what people make or if they wanted one and saved to buy one. I know I dont live outside my means and am able to afford it. but I also made sure I had enough money in saving and checking so it wouldn't bother me

LovinLife824 --- 13 years ago -

That's what turned me off. My mother in law has one and it works great. I was helping her clean one day and had to tote it up and down the stairs. No thank you! lol.

I couldn't even tell you the brand of our vacuum. I think it's a Hoover pet vacuum. We have a Husky and Shepard mix that shed a lot all year. During certain times of the years I'm vacuuming everyday. We've had it for 5 years now and it works just as good as the day we bought it. I'm not one to get caught up in name brands. Whatever works, works.
