someone was also telling me there was a place you could sign up for a free back pack full of school supplies does anybody know about this or know where to sign up at. I know an e3 with 4 kids and 2 of them start kintergarden this year and they cant really afford the school supplies. I just told them about these cheap deals but if they can get it for free that would help them out alot better. I also just told her i thought about getting her son school supplies for his birthday this coming week to help take some of the lift off their shoulders.
I went to manhattan today to go to childrens place and decided to hit up staples and walgreens and if you are looking for cheep school supplies i suggest going to staples they have better deals and more of a selection then walgreens. All i have left to buy is a couple of folders.( Well and kleenex, hand sanatizer, dry erase markers, baby whips, zip lock bags if i decide to buy any of that i dont think its right that they are making us buy dry erase markers for the teashers white boards Can understand the other things but not the markers)
hmm well they will be lucky if i buy them or not. They are asking for 2 pkgs of for kintergardners at Washington elementary. I really dislike their school supply list. They are asking for 12 glue sticks for the community supplies. REally if each student braught in 12 glue sticks thats 240 glue sticks if there are 20 kids. Im not sending 12 glue sticks in i baught a pkg of 6 and they will be lucky if i send all those in.
Ya usually school supplies isnt much what costs is the stuff like kleenex, zip lock bags(not sure why they are asking for those), baby whipes and hand sanatizer.
because of the damn cuts all the schools have to deal with.. I know alot of teachers buy stuff with their own money.. OUt of 25 kids only 15 will bring the appropriate stuff and that is why they ask for so many.. I don't mind sending extra if it means one child won't go without

Exactly how I feel... Midway through the school year teachers are begging for school supplies. Which usually leads them to purchase them themselves. I think school supplies are cheap and always try to pick up extra for the classroom. I think the very least people can do is buy what is on the list. The teachers aren't taking them for their own use.
Ya i guess you can put it that way. I know someone thats going to struggle to buy school supplies. Thats why i asked about the backpacks with free school supplies. But if the teachers are always needing more in the middle of the school year. (Not that they should be paying out of pocket) why dont they buy extra school supplies while they are on sale at this time of year? That way they are not paying regluar price later. I know if i was a teacher i would buy it on sale or wait till a couple weeks after school starts when they mark it down even more.

They do... actually some even wait until supplies are on sale after the rush. But there is ALWAYS something they need. Some are even limited by the school how much paper they can use. If someone struggles with getting their school supplies they should talk to the teacher. There are programs in place to help. When I ran a PTO we helped with those students. We didn't make in know because otherwise people who don't truly need it take advantage of the help. Our PTO also helped teachers during the year when supplies fell short. Teachers are not rich people and struggle in this economy just like everyone else. Teachers can write off $250 on their taxes for supplies but that covers very little. Most of the 'decor' (for lack of better wording) or learning tools you see on the walls or that are used in the classroom are purchased for by themselves.
I would love to "adopt" a couple students for school supplies.. Trust me I struggle myself and work 2 jobs, but it feels so good to help others sometimes.

Talk to your PTO, teacher or principal! They would probably give you and award for this!!! lol
And you're right it does feel good to help others. I have three kids and we always throw in some extras even though we struggle too.
Hey Everyone- I just wanted to put in my 2 cents worth. I am a Kinder teacher at washington elementary and I'm sorry you aren't happy with the school supply list. I promise you that those are all things that we will use throughout the school year. As for the glue sticks, we got through TONS!!! I had to ask for some towards the end of the year because I was running out. The reason why we go through them so much is that we glue on a daily basis, multiple times...on top of that kids use to much glue and then don't put the lid on them, so then they dry out. We also go through tons of other supplies that we don't ask for that do come out of our own pocket. I really hope that all the parents will buy what is on their's supply list because if they don't then that puts a bind on the teacher to pay fo those things out of their own pocket. We don't get an "allowance" for supplies for the classroom. So we are left to buy what is left. Thanks for everything that you guys do for your kiddos and I can't wait for a great year!!
I will buy whats on the list but i still think its a bit crazy. What ever happened to the parent buying for the student? (and if they run out buy more later on in the school year) such as pencils, eraser tops, paint, ect. The only community supply there use to be was tissue?
I really don't know why they do the community thing....this is my 3rd year and its just the way they have done it. Maybe it has to do with the abiltyto store it.....its easier to store things when I don't have to do it for 20 kiddos....rather than have to search thru for susies things.....other problem is u do have some parents who have buy no school supplies....so unfortunatly u pay for what others dont
See and thats where my problem is. I dont mind buying for people that i know need it, but i shouldnt have to buy for the ones that can afford it because they are being cheap. Like someone said school supplies are not too expensive so i dont know why some of them i know can afford them dont buy them.
I TOTALLY agree with "arewedoneyet"!!! I refuse to buy anything for anyone elses children. These supplies are not expensive at all. That's why they make the dollar tree, I don't want to hear how families are struggling with their 4 children blah blah blah...I have 4 kids myself and my husband is an e-5, I have no job-there is no reason why I cannot buy a couple of packs of $1 paper, $1 pencils, cheap crayons, & a binder or 2. None of these things will end up costing more than $10-15 per child. Also I don't care if the teacher has to come out of his/her own pocket-is there some type of policy forcing them to purchase supplies? It seems like a choice they are choosing to make on their own accord.
Well the people i know that will struggle to buy supplies for 2 is only and e3 4 kids. he is married but seperated so he is also having to pay his wife. His checks are only 700 a pay day after bills and food they barly has enough to get gas to make to work. I keep telling his g/f that she needs to make out a menu for 2 weeks and only buy what you need to make those meals and she wouldnt spend 300 dollar on groceries a pay day but she wont listen to me. I also keep telling her to wait till the weekened to do the grocery shopping and make her boyfriend go to the commissary with her so they can buy groceries there becuase it cheaper then them buying them at walmart not always but most the time. So there are people out there that truly cant afford to buy school supplies. I know 10 dollars may not seem like much but it could seem like aloto someone that is barly surviving, but for those who can they should buy them!!
Jazmine....there is no policy that says that teachers has to buy supplies, but I am one that doesn't want my students to go without so I see that my classroom has what is necessary.
Wow..........Maybe some parents can afford them but choose not to.. So I will donate a few extra supplies so those kids that the parents "forgot" or just plain didn't give two shi!ts. As for teachers, they do everything they can to help teach our children, if I can help with that by providing a few extra supplies I am doing it.... These teachers make or break our childs future!
I always send extra whatever. I peroidically send in kleenex/hand sanitizer/lysol wipes (those are super important in my mind). Supplies as needed (usually we get a letter saying the classroom is out of ________.) If it is field trip money, I send extra because there is always a family that might not be able to swing it, forgets, or the ones that just don't contribute. I don't want any kiddos getting left behind. I just like to help, but that is me.
Thank u!! I know I def appreciate parents like u and sodoes other teachers!!
You are welcome. Giving is a value that I really want my kids to pick up on. I figure the more ways we can figure out to give back, eventually it will just be part of their personalities. :)
