Please let me start off by saying I am not trying to hurt anyone. But what the heck? It seems like most people I meet here at Ft. Riley have a stick in their kiester. I have been an army wife almost 20 years and things are changing or I am just to southern and old as dirt. But people here just don't seem nice. I keep trying but I don't get it. I have never dealt with so many unhappy people. I always talk and greet people. But even I am starting to be careful. I wish people would just smile back, wave, hell even maybe just say hello. A nice Gesture goes further than a sour face.

notsue --- 12 years ago -

I agree. This is the only place I've been in the country where I can smile at someone as I pass by and instead of them smiling back they give me a dirty look. Really? Or a friendly wave to a neighbor because you are both out at the same time and they quickly turn away like "Damn, she saw me". I dont know what people are drinking around here, but its not friendly juice.

MissThe80s --- 12 years ago -

"Damn, she saw me".

LOL. I know that one! I don't chit chat with the trash I see around this post; example, the lady I just walked passed who was at least eight and a half months pregnant puffing on a cancer stick. If I had to guess, I'd guess she's sipping on something other than the local tap water.

Garbage Vulture --- 12 years ago -

You know what I hate? When I hold the door open for a woman, and she puts her hand on the door....like I was gonna slam it on her head. HOW DID SHE KNOW?

DD2008 --- 12 years ago -

I agree! We aren't new to ks(born & raised) but a lot of people in this area(ft riley,jc,manhattan) are rude & stuck up. Love when we go to our home towns, lot more relaxed and friendly people.

Garbage Vulture --- 12 years ago -

I guess you would know that Im not from here then, cause I talk to everybody, some because I think they are interesting, and some just to mess with them.

Garbage Vulture --- 12 years ago -

So i just went to the Shoppette and made a point to say Hi to everone in the place. The clerk did not want to sell me beer after that, thought I was drunk

tmmundy2 --- 12 years ago -

It honestly seems like people here are afraid of kidness. I love to bake for people. But i think my neighbors over here dont want any form of socializing. It can be for a couple of reasons. One i have a autistic son whom will forever be an adult 6 year old. He is really sweet but people are afraid of what they dont understand. Two i dont have any little people in my home at all. And three maybe because my husbands rank. Wich if they would just give me a chance. One they wpuld see i try to be a good mom, two i am not going to be a snoot about anything, and three my hisband is a stand offish guy but he is really nice. I have only one neighbor wich whom i wouldnt trade for thw world. If it wasnt for her and her families kindness i would feel actually lonely over here. If someone says hi to me i try and go out of my way to say hi back. I just dont understand why the wifes here are so ummm scarred. I guess. I miss the old army. They moral wives band together and stuck up for each other. And families knew it took a wholr army to raise one child. Its sad yo know we retire from here and this is how we end our army life. Surrounded by saddness.

Its a big change. I am from Alabama where you wave at everyone you pass while driving, you smile when you look at people, here if you do that people think youre insane haha. I think its because everyone comes from all over around here so they arent use to that.

tmmundy2 --- 12 years ago -

I wish that was the case but honestly i dont think so. I have been to almost all of the army post and i can say this by far is the crankiest. I t

yellowrose --- 12 years ago -

Ive been here for 3 years and also an army wife of 19 1/2 years and the people around here are the worse! So many rude and ignorant folks, and I swear hardly anyone on post can drive. Some reason when ever I am turning into my housing area people believe the brim of the road is their own passing zone.

Garbage Vulture --- 12 years ago -

Its illegal to pass on the right and the fine is $100.

yellowrose --- 12 years ago -

Yeah tell them that LOL They dont care and i see it ALL the time, especially by rifle range rd. and the ralley point

Man, I just got a good chuckle from that!

notsue --- 12 years ago -

I got a neighbors mail the other day, it was a magazine, so I decided to go drop it off at their house. I walk down there and knock on the door and a few big sounding dogs start barking at the door. There were two vehicles in the driveway also and lights on in the house. Eventually the dogs stopped barking and nobody answered the door. This isnt the first time I've been ignored, and I think its stupid how scared people are to open the door.

Brianna --- 12 years ago -

Yellowrose....I think they should just put a camera on my house and snap pics of everybody. I saw a motorcycle just about get creamed yesterday because someone was passing on the shoulder. There is a soldier on a bike who rides home from work and I cannot put a number on how many times some idiot trying to pass on the shoulder is surprised he is there. Not to mention the two officers directing traffic that were hit last spring and fall. Most of the drivers are civilians that I see who pass on the shoulder and some are like clockwork. Drivers here make me sick!

I had to laugh when this image popped in my mind: Stacy's restaurant in Grandview Plaza has the greatest folks, local and servers alike. I have, on occasion, seen the kind of folks you speak of visit and depart the restaurant with a sour look on their face. You know they are not local, you know they are out of place, you know they are sour 24/7.

No matter how much one might dislike "Junk City", folks can always enjoy the food and company at Stacy's. C:

Ok I do have to agree with this, I am not local by any means lol But I absolutely love going to Staceys. I go every time I get a chance lol

janiedoer --- 12 years ago -

I find it the opposite around here (not on post)! I have people wave to me all the time and I also wave! I find a lot of very friendly people just about everywhere in this part of KS!

D Ann --- 12 years ago -

I used to be out going and friendly with my neighbors but after my husband deployed I got very busy with my children and everyday life as a single parent so I was unable to be social and as the months passed I found out they were talking about me behind my back ( I over heard them ) so I just figured it was best to just wave if they waved at me and go on with my life without them as friends! I'm now closed off from people who aren't in my close circle of friends but I will never be rude to any stranger. I wasn't raised that way being that I am a southern girl too :)

tmmundy2 --- 12 years ago -

I find more fakeness here. And as far as people talking behind others backs that just a sign of weekness. I always say a true friend will tell me to my face when there is something wrong or they dont like. A fake friend wil lie,to your face with there lips moving the whole time. I know certain people have talked about me. But it mostly because they are to afraid to tell me to my face. Wich is sad because i have more respect for someone being honest and i cherrish those people the most. If u want,to be my friend i expect the truth as well as being able,to tell it.

notsue --- 12 years ago -

The only thing I've hid from people that have been close with me is that I know that they stole something from me. I figure its better to keep it to myself and avoid the drama that will come from them trying to lie to me about what happened or whatever.

JPaint21 --- 12 years ago -

I think it's because a lot of the friendly people choose to live in the smaller towns. Just my opinion, I guess. We live in Abilene and we meet all kinds of friendly people and everyone says Hi and what not. I don't go on post except to the commissary really, so I don't know what it's like there.

I do know that a lot of people are bitter about having to live in Kansas. We chose this place and we love it here, but lots of people hate it. That might be why people are cranky all the time.

We also lived in Alabama, as referenced above, and found it to be not nearly as friendly as what we expected. We're from Iowa, which is very friendly, and we felt like people always kept us at arm's length in Alabama, even though we tried to get involved locally and make friends.

LovinLife824 --- 12 years ago -

I choose not to socialize with my neighbors. They are too close to home. If they wave or say hi, I definitely respond and have had short chats with a few. I choose not to take it any further. One of our neighbors constantly has police over and I don't need drama in my life. Whoever said that the driving in neighborhoods is unsafe is correct! My other neighbor almost hit me, because she wasn't even looking when driving. I stopped my car because I could see from afar she was bent over the passenger's seat not payin attention. Last night I almost got hit again by another driver driving in the middle of the road. I've never driven around so many idiots, especially in JC.

MissThe80s --- 12 years ago -

One of our neighbors constantly has police over and I don't need drama in my life.

Do you know why they "constantly have police over"? I joke with the MPs that have stopped over at my residence, that people's minds must run rampid with suspicion over what's the what in our home; when, the truth is, a police report has to be filed everytime an abandoned, stray, or neglected animal finds it's way on our porch. Do you know why they have to do this? Because they've had far too many psychotic neighbors retaliate over their neglected animal being picked up and...and then having to pay a fee to get it back from the shelter. Unreal, right? Well, the unsafe drivers contribute to why I "bother" to place the animals in a better environment; that, along with the drastic change in weather, and lack of proper food and water (many have collars on; they're domestic).

I know what you mean though, about the drama. There are kids and parents shouting with cops over at the park pavilions over drugs and theft on a regular basis in different areas of Forsyth.

LovinLife824 --- 12 years ago -

You're right, rumors probably fly once police are involved. Once I know it was a domestic issue. Another time it had to deal with their teenage son. Another time someone was carried out in an ambulance. It's always something. That's why I choose not to get involved. Some people are just MP happy and call them every time they breathe.

Brianna --- 12 years ago -

Speaking of drivers....the Chinese delivery car goes way to fast. He just about hit me walking last night. I know it is 15mph in Forsyth, but I am sure he does at least double that. Delivery drivers are the worst!

tmmundy2 --- 12 years ago -

I dont understand not being friends with neighbors because they are to close to home. I am not sure what that means. I like being friends with my neighbors well in the past. We used to every weekend get together and have bbq's wich was so much fun and helped pass, the time. we also threw thw biggest parties on post for the kids. We did a party one, year and had ove 150 people show it was so nice just having a good time. A lot of work but worth it. And as far as drama easy fix to it just liaten, and, dont repeat anything ever. And trust me you will never be in the middle. As far as mps they always stopped by my house to check on my son joey just,to make sure he was ok. Especially after being harrassed by two of,them and other adults. Like i said before its hard to understand something you dont live. But the mps still stop by my house to ask how he is even though i sent him home to get him outta this place.
This has been the only place wherw i havent seen the women bond together and learn from each other. Maybe i am to old or,maybe i just dont get the new army. I just knpw when i was a new wife many moons ago i had someone take me under her wing. And i have taken other wifes under mine. Being a single wife and mother can be so hard. But if you have other ladies to lean on it makes it easier to get thru.
My neighbors stay to themselves excwpt for me i do put my self out there. I figure you either love me or hate me. And i find those who do hate me its because they dont understand i live my life like a duck. I let the bad roll off my back and fix what i can. Let go of what i cant. And duck dive to avoid what has nothing to do with me.
I can spot a drama start 100 miles away and i just duck dive it or them.
