i tipped both of the young men who helped bag mine the other day, and the lady behind me tapped me on the scholder and said (i kid you not) "Thanks for tipping both of them. Now I don't have to tip to get my groceries bagged." I looked at her and said, "umm..I tipped for MY groceries being bagged, not yours." Her reply "Oh. Well, I NEVER tip more than a QUARTER!"
I serioiusly thought I was about to clock her. The baggers, the cashier, and the person behind her all glared at her as well.
Wow, that is the first time I have ever heard of the younger ones being rude. For me they are typically overly nice, lol. The older ones? Not so much.
As for the lady who said that crap to armyngwife--I'd have let her have it. How ignorant. I'd have pulled out my phone, when to www.dictionary.com and showed her the definition of the word "tip". It's a gratuity for services rendered, meaning YOUR services, not mine.
...I'd have been tempted to get a quarter out of my own purse and throw it squarely in the middle of her hateful face, lol. Yes, tipping is optional--but if you don't want to tip why not take your own bags out? Cow...lol.
