I liked living off post better. I can tell you if you chose to rent off post stay clear or RKS management company. They are the worst rental management company ever. They will do very little but charge you out the xxx for damages or whatever.

On post housing isn't bad either. We lived in a tri level in Warner heights when we lived here. Nicer housing areas are Forsyth and Ellis heights they have been remodeling mcclellan when I was leaving and I know a few people that live in those and are not bad either. My kids never went to school on post. Just off post. I only had 1 in kindergarten for a yr before we pcsed so can't really say if I liked the school she was in or not. She went to Washington elementary in junction city closer to trooper gate.

Junction city is the closest town to base but manhattan is only a 20 minute drive. That's where k-state is the have a small mall but it has your basic more popular stores. If you want a bigger mall or more shopping options topeka and salina are only an hr away kansas city and wichtia are 2 hra away. selection of restraunts in manhattan than junction city. Also manhattan is where country stampede is held in June every yr. you also got Omaha which has an awesome zoo that's 4 hrs away if you are looking for a weekend get away to take the kids somewhere.

Kansas offers a lot of outdoor activities. Hunting fishing caring ECt. Some people dislike fort riley either their unit is crappy or they are more of city people. We didn't mind it we were 7 hrs home. It offered my husband what he loves best FISHING and HUNTING.

We hate it in Germany where we currently are. Yes there is a lot of travelin and stuff to be done here and a lot of history to see but as my husband says this is a vacation spot not a place to live for 3 yrs. we can't wait to be out of here in 2 yrs. and hopefully back in kansas. Kansas was our 1st duty station, close to home and we own a duplex there.

oh and horses that reminds me...i want a horse so bad it hurts...but would need either somewhere to board it or a house that i could have a horse at if possible and still be near riley.

cocowgirl777 --- 12 years ago -

i love living on post here at lewis and love my house...but dont like anything i have seen on riley...then looked at houses in manhattin on craigslist...looks like white trash central...not super excited about that so far. good thing i have most of a year to figure out all of this lol.

Ya plenty of time to find that right house.l like I said dont rent from RKS managment. We had them managing our house since our house was located in a neighborhood that they have some properties located in and they have been robbing us the past 9 months since we left. We finally switched to quality home as managers and they seem to be doing a better job. If I recommend someone to rent from I would recommend quality home managment as the owner is retired military and under stands military people. But if you want a horse of course you would need to be put out in the country

We live off post and will never live on. There are other cities besides Manhattan and JC. Try ahrn.com for rentals. Milford, Herington, Chapman, Abilene and Enterprise. The drive to post is not bad at all. They are small town living and the schools are fantastic! Tons of things for kids to do. As far as college schools, K State, Manhattan Tech, Cloud County Community College (JC), then there are some in Salina as well.

Hope that helped as well.

We stayed here after we retired... we like it here... to us its like any other town... has its good and bad... we never lived on post, only off and we bought... loved our house on a cul-de-sac... now we live out in the county with some land and love it too.. it does suck that if you want a mall or like target, kmart, some other restaurants, that you have to drive to Manhattan or Salina, or Topeka... but hey, that is ok.. I have made some great friends here and love it...

I didnt have kids in any of the elementary schools... my youngest was a freshman when we moved here... but he didnt have any problems here... my granddaughter went to kindergarten at Lincoln before they moved to alta vista and she loved the class she was in...

anna... yes...white trash central. i have gone looking for houses for rent and the vast majority that i have found are singlewide trailers, and houses that look like they need paint, wood work, and updating to get them out of the 60s lol. i love the small town thing, and the fact that its in the country...but i need a house for rent either near base thats decient or that i can have a horse at. so far the pickings are slim. dont get me wrong im not saying the ppl are white trash...just what i can find online so far...its how it looks. my friend just told me there is a really trashy side of town and a nice side of town so im justt gonna assume the ones ive found so far are on the trashy side.

For Off Post housing, try www.ahrn.com as someone else suggested, if you haven't already. You can enter in what you are looking for house/apt, # of bedrooms and bathrooms etc and it will show you all the available listings. Although I don't think you'll be able to find a house close to post that will let you keep a horse, you can also call the off post housing office at 785-239-3525. They may know of some places that would allow horses. My daughter went to Custer Hill ele on post and all I can say is never again. The principle was awful. I moved her to Franklin in Junction for the past 2 yrs and what an improvement. The staff is wonderful, it's like night and day. A lot of people attend Barton Community College. I got my associates degree 100% on line with them and then transfered to K State. I'd be very careful looking for rentals on craigslist. There have been a lot of scams where people list a house, someone sends them the deposit, and then they get here and the place never existed etc. You won't have that worry with ahrn becuase everything has to be inspected by the off post housing employees. Good Luck!

I have a horse and board about 3 miles from post. Not fancy but every horse has a box stall and feed is included. Tons of trails there too. If you want more info, let me know.

We've lived on post and off. When we first moved here we lived in Manhattan. My husband hated the commute after a few months, so once our lease was up we moved on post. I miss living in Manhattan, but the convenience of my husband and me living closer to our jobs makes up for that lol! We live in McClellan, the newly remodeled townhomes and they are awesome. Picerne has always had maintenance out quickly, their staff is friendly and really have no complaints about our place. Just our neighbors...that's a whole other story!

I would say the job market is slim pickings. They do have some jobs available, but the communities are so small. I'm used to being around big cities and jobs are everywhere. It took me a while to find one here that fit what I was looking for. Just go in with an open mind.

My daughter goes to Ware on post. She loved it and we loved it. The staff was great and they really challenged my daughter academically. I work at Franklin part time and love that school as well. Franklin gives me more of a sense of a small town school. Everyone knows everyone. The principal is outstanding and really interacts with the kids. It's not a huge school, which I love. Not everyone has the same experiences at schools though.

Country bars...don't know lol. I have a friend that goes to KC every weekend to Whiskey Tango. They love it. I've never been, but it must be something if they go every weekend. I'm not sure if they have any in Aggieville, which is in Manhattan...

If you're doing a DITY move, more power to you! We've done it twice and I'll never do it again lol.

There are two "country bars" in the Junction City area. One is called Corey's Country Corral and is just off the interstate in the Grandview Plaza area, and the other is Coyote Saloon in Junction City. Corey's is a little more grown-up type crowd, a little less military influence. Coyote Saloon is much more single military people and that type of thing.

If you're looking for somewhere out in the country where you could keep a horse, try looking around Chapman/Enterprise/Abilene area. Much more rural and "country" than Junction or Manhattan.

Manhattan is far from white-trash central. It has "college living" areas that aren't as nice, but there are tons of really nice neighborhoods. If you want to keep your horse at your house though, I would say you probably won't find much over that way.
