We are retiring soon and are debating on doing a DITY move. We are moving to Texas , we have never done a DITY move so not sure if we really want to. If you have done one what is your opinion on doing another?

tmmundy2 --- 12 years ago -

We did a partial ditty everytime. It wasnt bad. I actually would have perfered to do a full dity this time if our house was ready i would. And then hire a few guys to help move furniture, but this time we have to look at storage.
Does your husband have any back issues and do u grumble at each other when things get stressful.
I would for sure do it if i was alone. Its 515.00 for 26 foot uhaul for three 24 hour periods from here to harrison arkansas.

MissAttitude --- 12 years ago -

I looked at budget because they give a military discount and have unlimited mikes, for us to get a 24 foot truck for 4 days it would be 690 plus gas. I just don't want to put more money into it then we would make

We are doing a dity move right now. It was only $250 for a 16" truck Penske truck for 4days. It's a lot of work but we will make some money off it.

MissAttitude --- 12 years ago -

Dd where are you going ?

MissAttitude --- 12 years ago -

My husband said we don't need a 24 foot truck, so I compared the price of a 16 foot from uhaul, penske and budget. Budget was cheaper then all 3 for a 4 day rental. But I read penske will price match so I'm not which we will use.

Its effort, you have to pay for your own insurance, you get taxed on the money. Full Dity not worth it to me.

MissAttitude --- 12 years ago -

That's true gv, I always hear people making crap tons of money from doing DITY moves and in all of our 20 years in the Army we have never done one. I'm still on the fence about doing it.

We do partial dity for some items, the stuff we need for the week we have to wait for goods, but my time is worth something also. You have to rent the truck for the loading and unloading time as well as the drive time.

Before we sunk in to do a dity move, I spoke to a very good friend about it. Get this the money that they had to pay out of pocket and then got Partially rembusrsed for they ended up paying taxes on and getting YOU KNOW WHAT in the end...Said they didn't make any money they ended up loosing a lot. They went from Knox to West Virginia.
So, I have decided after taking many peps advice I will not be doing a full dit move.
I do however have to do a partial but that is because we have items that no way in tar am I trusting those movers with them. They break and steal. Let me tell you there is no way they can pay for a 1800's wood burning cook stove...And some of my special pieces..I don't even trust my husband with, Oh no went into worry mode again dang me..haha

We did DITY everytime we moved with the Marines. What we found:
1. It is more stressful
2. You fight more because of the stress
3. You know who to blame if someone messes something up...lol

The next move we do, we are going to have them move us.

MissAttitude --- 12 years ago -

See here is my dilemma, I thought we left June 28 but we leave July 3rd. I just don't want to be stuck without our stuff forever since its a 4 day weekend when we leave. We are retiring in the fort hood area ... I know when we left will to come here, our movers literally followed us in our car. They were awesome, but I know its not going be like that again.

janiedoer --- 12 years ago -

You can look into a partial DITY move, where you put what you will need in your vehicle(s) and the packers take the rest. Very similiar to doing HHG and unaccompanied baggage when overseas. We had done it that way when moving from GA to WA.

DD2008 --- 12 years ago -

We are only moving a couple hrs away. We are from ks and hubby is getting out of the army. It's really stressful doing it our selves but I prefer to move it myself. This is our second move and first was a full dity also. Even after taxes we make some money from it.

MissAttitude --- 12 years ago -

My previous comment was supposed to say when we left ft. Will not will lol

tmmundy2 --- 12 years ago -

This is our final move as well. But since our houses will not be ready and we r staying in our rvs i just dont think so.
Plus the stress. My husnand and i go at it...i swear last move we did, i pulled my nija turtle moves on him...
Plus i am so hyper at times and clutzy i might hurt myself..lol
What ever u choose to do it will be ok...
What does your husband want? And do u have true reliable people to help u move here and there.

MissAttitude --- 12 years ago -

He feels the same as me, I think we may just go ahead and allow the Army to move us.
I hate packing, but I don't mind unpacking though. Lol.

tmmundy2 --- 12 years ago -

I love to unpack and redecorate a new house. Since this will be my last move though i cant really wait...finally all mine..

tmmundy2 --- 12 years ago -

Did you already buy a,house in hood.

MissAttitude --- 12 years ago -

Not yet we are waiting until may to buy one so we won't have a house payment there, bah here and we already own a house in Oklahoma but it is being rented out.

tmmundy2 --- 12 years ago -

Yea my renters have two small children. I cod give them 30 day notice since we did month to month. But i just cant bring myself to it.
