Does anyone know if and when they will put turkeys on sale for Thanksgiving? I saw they were a $1.20 a pound at the commissary, is that expensive?

notsue --- 12 years ago -

1.20 seems reasonable... 99 cents would be better, but not a big change from 1.20. Everything I looked at yesterday was around 3$ a pound, dont think I looked at a turkey tho... I was distracted. I'd happily pay 1.20$ a pound for a bird.

TheMom --- 12 years ago -

Thank Sue. I was wondering the same thing as
The original poster.

oh ok thanks for the info. I wasnt sure since when I was looking at them some older lady came by and looked at the price and said 1.20 a pound , my god and then walked away

Are we done yet --- 12 years ago -

Last yr Walmart jc the were like 97 cents a lb might check their. But yr to ye prices are different. We don't do turkey unless it's deep fried my husband nor I are not fans if oven baked turkey do prime rib it is this yr!!

Last year I went nuts and bought a precooked smoked turkey... I knew we were going to have a lot of people over and I had planned many of dishes so I wanted to save myself some headache and went with a different turkey than I normally would so I could focus on making the side dishes to die for. We had a ham also and I havent found a precooked ham I didnt like. Expensive crap tho.

I never buy one if it is over $1.00/lb. Walmart usually has them for under 1.00/lb, a little closer to Thanksgiving. But I think prices of everything has gone up, so that may not be the same this year. On another note, coupons.com had a coupon for butterball brand turkeys :)

MissAttitude --- 12 years ago -

I saw turkeys at Wal mart today for 98 cents a pound, but they were some off brand name I never heard of. I only buy butterball ones and they were 1.28 a pound at Wal mart, I got mine at the commissary for 1.20

I used to buy the most expensive brand of turkey for Thanksgiving because I really thought it made a difference in how juicy it came out. I have cooked the turkey in a bag for the last 4 years and no longer have to worry about that, so whatever is cheapest will do.

When we were in AZ the radio station had a contest where they would announce whatever store had the cheapest per pound turkey. Stores would call in their price and the radio would put it out. We got turkey at 19 cents per pound that day.

the price usually drops the closer to Thanksgiving it gets by the week but so does the choices as far as lbs

I have looked EVERYWHERE for a turkey between 20-22 pounds and I can not find one, they are either 13-15 pounds or 23-27 pounds. I was thinking of buying a 23 pound one and ripping his legs off and shoving him in my roaster lol

So, this will be my first year cooking a turkey. Any tips? Do bags really work Tee C?

Hope (Mod) --- 12 years ago -

bags are nice but i wrap in aluminum foil and have not noticed a difference. I cook mine in a roaster and i cook it low and long and its tender with stock then use my stock and drippings for my stuffing after as I don't stuff my turkey.

MissAttitude --- 12 years ago -

I have always used a baking bad and never made a bad turkey. However this year I bought an electric roaster and was wondering how to do it.
Hope do you add water or stock to it in the roaster or just wrap it in the foil and let it go?

Hope (Mod) --- 12 years ago -

i wrap it in foil and add stock for moisture in the roaster and its on the rack so when i lift it the liquid drains and my turkey can cool and then I cup out the amount of stock I need add for stuffing and also use it with the chopped giblets for my gravy

Bags are great! The first time I used one I was skeptical, but they're phenomenal. 1) The bird will come out nice and brown with moist meat and crisp skin. 2) It cooks far faster than doing it the traditional way. I used to stay up all night on Thanksgiving eve basting the bird to make sure it wasn't dry, and now I don't have to. We are only a family of 3 so I get about an 18-20 pound bird, pop it in the oven inside a bag at about 7am, and by no later than noon it's ready to go.

Target has Butterball turkeys on sale for $.99 a pound right now.

D Ann --- 12 years ago -

I bought a Market Pantry turkey at Target for .79 a lb 3 days ago. I've also bought the breast in the past and they are very good!

I buy those disposable roaster pans and made my first turkey last year and it was awesome and I hate turkey haha. I injected the crap out of it with garlic butter and chicken stock and shoved a onion inside of it...it was so flavorful and juicy. It also didnt take that long at all to cook...I always heard it taking all day but It was done by noon haha.

notsue --- 12 years ago -

People act like cleaning takes all day too... even when my house is a disaster, it only takes 2 hours to clean it from top to bottom.

I need to pick up a turkey soon... I've considered just getting the breast tho.

Search and find them giblets! c;

Go online to McCormick's Seasonings webpage and search out the right bird recipe for you. If that doesn't help, youtube, youtube, youtube! C:

wally world had .88 up to 1.06 per lb today out depending on brand

JPaint21 --- 12 years ago -

In my experience, holiday foods like turkey and ham seem to be better priced on sale at regular grocery stores. Outside of holiday season, they're usually cheaper at the commissary, but most regular grocery stores have better sales at holiday time on that type of stuff.

I've stuffed my turkey with onions, and with apples that have cloves pricked into them. Yuuuuuuuuuum, lol.

Gemini09 --- 12 years ago -

Apple with cloves? Hmmmmm....

I am really just worried about cooking time. I know that my oven tends to over cook everything, and I am worried I will cook it too long. I don't want it to be done too early either!
