Just hit my inbox:

Due to budget cuts the Army will NOT be able to fund winter busing for the following areas in the Custer Hill area:

AP Hill, Ashby, Beuregard, Bragg, Burnside Loop, Fleetwood, Gordon, Hampton, Hood, Jackson, Knight, Longstreet, Lorraine Circle, McClellan Loop, Meade, Mosby, Pickett, Thomas, Tobie and Tuttle.

A busing option for parents living in the Custer Hill housing area is to enroll their student in the Teen Center. The Teen Center provides before and after school care which includes providing a shuttle service to FRMS. We will have a representative from the Teen Center here during Student-Led Conferences next week to assist you in signing up for this program and explain their fees and services.

We lived in Junction City (a good 15 minute walk to the high school), but the city didn't have bus service for our daughter to ride to and from school. She either had to walk or we'd give her a ride. Normally that wouldn't be an issue, but you can't get a driver's license there until 17 years old so it sucked to cart your teen around everywhere. Now for post? I think that's really crappy. It isn't the kids' or their parents fault they have to go to school off-post, so they should have a better alternative than, "Oh well--if you want your child to get to school then you're going to have to pay Youth Services to take them." One of the perks of having older children is that you don't have to pay daycare fees anymore; you can't even claim the fees on your taxes after age 13 unless they have a special need.

This is not a cancellation of any current busing. It is a notice that the special busing that is usually there for winter will not happen. If they have a bus now it will continue. The post used to pay extra so that kids who walked could have a bus in winter. Now they dont
