Has anyone had there gallbladder removed? How long did it take, recovery time ect? Also, my hubby is deployed right now and i need to have this done but i have no one to care for my babies ect while this is going on, so do they do a redcross message for this or what? Any advice/help is appreciated. Thanks

I just had this surgery in April. Took about three days for me to feel back to normal, other than you are not supposed to lift anything over ten pounds for four to six weeks after. They try and do it laparoscopically, three small incisions and an incision at your belly button.

As far as Red Cross goes, they can send a message but I don't think it is something that will get your husband home for. It is a same day surgery and they send you home shortly after. It took me over a month to get my appt after finding out I had gallstones. That was after a trip
To the ER, then an appt for an ultrasound and seeing my PCM and then waiting a few days later for Tricare to approve the surgery, and on top of that the consult with the surgeon. Then the surgery appt is scheduled. You will then need to go in the day before the actual surgery to do pre-op.

Hope that gave you a bit of help.

I had it done after I had my first son. After all the gall bladder attacks I had the surgery was easy peasy haha. I had to stay over night but you usually dont. Its pretty quick and I was taking care of my baby the next day. You feel like you have done about 1000 crunches.

I'm no help with the red cross stuff.

I had my gall bladder removed about 7 years ago. I actually got really sick because I thought I had a kidney stone and kept thinking it would pass and refused to go to the Dr. Finally after 3 days I couldn't stand up anymore and begged my mom to get me to the hospital. I went into surgery the next morning and went home the next day. Recovery was easy compared to how I felt before. Just pay attention to what the Dr says and you will be just fine.

Morning,

I had my gallbladder removed around 3 in the morning several years back. Everyone's situation is different; but, I was in the hospital for almost a week. My husband didn't even know I had surgery until I was home (I think, or at least until one of the last days in the hospital; he was deployed at the time). I was blessed to have my parents there to take care of my children (it didn't hurt that all of us worked for the hospital and new all the docs); however, it's not a red cross emergency, that I am aware of. You should, however, log onto your vFRG and scroll down to the bottom of the page; their you will find guidance on red cross procedure.

I only weighed maybe 112 at the time; but, be warned-the surgical process involves inflating you. You WILL be a little ball of gas for several weeks post surgery, and fitting into your clothes is no fun. It took me quite a while to recover as well; I shouldn't have gone back to work as soon as I had; but, I was stubborn and utterly bored sitting at home.

Lastly, I still get attacks. There are plenty of dietary adjustments one may make to ease attacks; just know, a good percentage aren't "cured" by gallbladder surgery.

I can't help about the surgery as I have not had mine out.. but when my husband was deployed and I had to have my appendix out, a friend of mine sent a message so he would know, but he didnt get to come home... luckily my very pregnant sister had come down for the week when it happened... Mark did not know I was even in the hospital until like 2 weeks later, when he called and I told him. However, this was years ago.. but I am guessing that it has not changed much...

Oh yeah, beware after you have it out some foods still might bother you and you might eat and then have to go straight to the bathroom. That is how it did my brother. I have no issues though since I had mine out.

I had my gallbladder out while my husband was deployed a few years ago and they sent him amessage but would not send him home. As it was not a life threatening surgery. I had laproscopic they made 3 little incisions and i was home that evening. I was sore but nothing that I couldnt handle. However 95% of the time I eat now, i have to run straight to the bathroom. I feel like i might as well rub the food on y @$$ and throw it down the toilet...it really goes through me that fast. There are meds out there that can help with this matter, however I hate taking meds because most of the time the side effects are way worse then the actual problem
Good Luck!

this surgery is a quick in and out unless you develop issues by not following the rules mostly once back home. Finding out you cant eat the same and digest as you are familiar with will be the big adjustment for some. A few hours of childcare you have for a deployed hubby to have your kids cared for while in and if you got a friend who can pick you up would be what I would be looking at.

I got mine removed last February here at IACH. As long as it's laparoscopy it's a quick surgery and recovery. Mine was just all of a sudden and had to go to the hospital due to severe pains, so they got me in as soon as they could. I went in around 6 the morning of my surgery and was out of the hospital the same day by 3ish I believe. I was fully recovered and up and about in roughly 2-3 weeks. I was nervous since it was my only surgery, but it was all very easy. Prior to surgery when I was having pains I could barely eat anything, but afterwards my body adjusted fairly quick to all kinds of foods. You can't lift more than about 10lbs while recovering, which isn't too long. I have 3 tiny scars from the incisions they had to make for the tubes. The doctors and nurses were very great and helpful. I doubt it is something that your husband would be able to come home for since it is such a minimal surgery and it's an in and out process, but of course they would inform him about it if you'd like. Best of luck to you.

I had mine out when I was 17 less then two weeks later was playing competitive fastpitch softball.. It heals faster then most surgeries.. First week I slept most of the time.. After that wasn't a issue

I totally agree with both of these statements. I had my son about 6 years ago and had my first and only attack (that I know of because I was in so much pain just didn't know what it was at the time) about 6months after I had him and went to the ER when they told me what it was and that I would need surgery right away. The surgery is pretty quick and me personally I have never had problem eating certains foods but everyone can be different too. Things do go through you very quickly so be prepared to going to the bathroom much more frequently. Also listen to the doctors and follow their rules very closely. I am hard headed and had to learn the hard way. I didn't really do much of the breathing exercises that they told me to do and as soon as I went home within 24hours I was back in the hospitol again for the next few days because I didn't listen and had gotten pneumonia (sp?)which wasn't fun at all. I have to admit I am still hard headed about other things but each time I've had to go back and do any kind of breathing exercises I make sure to do it.
