I am writing this ad for everybody that gives their dog away free to a good home!! Bookoo and craigslist are dangerous places to advertise a dog, especially a free one. I'm not sure if you are familiar with what a bait dog is, so I will give a quick explanation. People who run dog fighting rings use bait dogs, which are basically punching bags for fighting dogs. As we all know, dogs don't punch; they bite, rip and tear. They are used to teach dogs how to kill, to acquire a taste for blood and to excite a game dog right before it is put into a fight. These evil people tie the bait dog up, so it can't get away. Then they either tape it's mouth shut with duct tape or break it's teeth out, so that it can't fight back. Then they unleash anywhere from one to four dogs on it and let them have at it, usually until it's dead. There are a small percentage of them who survive this. There is book called "Oogy", which is a story about a bait dog who survived. When you see his picture, you will wonder how he ever did survive.
People who want bait dogs will come to you acting like they are just looking for a pet. They are evil and will do whatever they have to in order to get dogs. They prefer non aggressive Pit Bulls, but they will also take about any dog they can get for free or little money. They go through a lot of bait dogs, so they are always looking for more. Find another way to network your dog if you care about it. Some get used for laboratory testing. Which is another horrible form of animal abuse. I would recommend network through your friends and family, contact a rescue or place an ad on Rescueme.com. Charge adoption fee to help weed out those who are looking for free dogs.
Don't assume that you can take it to a shelter and it will be ok. Most dogs who go to shelters are put to sleep before they are able to find a new home.

Dog fighting happens a lot more around the world than anyone would think. Until someone is caught for it that's about the only time people hear about it.

Of course this happens alot...why dont u look up the book?!?! Every day there is dog fights and dogs get killed brutally and the bait dogs get killed almost every day for "practice"....

Its a good thing to look out for but I wouldn't say don't advertise on those sites. Anyone who sells anything has a chance of something going terribly wrong. Its your responsibility to take the necessary precautions to prevent anything bad from happening.

Im not saying that it does not happen. I just saying that the chances of your dog ending as a bait dog are so small that you should not worry about it.

Yes it hppens A LOT....just last year they busted a dog fighting ring in Lawrence. They have to train the dogs somehow and free dogs are the perfect practice! They as steal dogs if they can't get them any other way!

I have been facebook friends with Oogie for a long time...so sad, but glad someoe could look past the deformity and love him!

Here is a good story on the price of free to good home ads.

Has anyone read "The Lost Dogs" the book written about the Michael Vick dogs? It was hard to read but so good and definitely worth the tears it cost me. Some of the last few of his dogs came up for adoption a couple of monts ago!
