We finally have orders!! Im gonna miss it here but I'm so ready to try a new place! Can anyone tell me about Ft Drum? Is it nice there? Are the houses nice? What are the schools like there? Anything you could tell me would be awesome! Thanks :)

Fort Drum is my favorite duty station we ever been too. We were there for over 4 years. The winters are long and very cold. Ive seen it start snowing in aug and not end until may. The snow is measured by feet not inches. The autumn is absolutely beautiful. You have to go to the Burrville Cider Mill in the fall and get their homemade apple cider donuts. Syracuse is an hour south and they have an amazing mall called the Carousel mall. In the summer theres the Thousand Islands, sackets harbor, the Adirondack mountains are about 2 and half hours away.
Housing is really nice, we had a 2 bedroom. Everyone gets a garage. Actus lend lease are the ones that run housing there and they are awesome to work with.
As for schools it will depend on what side of post you live, the front half goes to Indian River and the back half goes to Carthage.
My husband retires next year and we have decided that the Drum / Watertown area is where we want to retire. I cant wait to get back there!
Good luck !!

We were there for 6 years and loved it. Embrace the weather and get involved in winter activities (snowmobiling, skiing etc) Lots of wineries, hiking trials....so much wonderful outdoor stuff :)

There are a lot of horror stories about Fort Drum, but it is just like any other duty station: the way you perceive it is the way you'll live it.

Yes, there is a ka-ton of snow, but you will get used to it. It won't take long to adapt to the climate.

There are lots of things to do and places to travel; if you live venturing into the burroughs, you will enjoy urban New York. The shopping is fab.

Drum is expensive, so save lot of money for expenses before getting there. I was told that the housing list there is sort of long, and off-post housing can be hard to come by and costly.

Blessings to you.

I dont think drum was expensive, it costs a lot more here than it does there. And at least your BAH there will cover a decent place to live.
We were there almost 5 years and I loved everything about it. I cant wait to get back there.

I thought it looked inexpensive when we looked into it as a duty station. That was based on peeps that lived and loved it there, and looking at Watertown and surrounding areas via Realtor.com. Also, not factoring in heating bills (I'd have invested in a pellet stove, for sure). They have a lot of older homes there. I'd check out their underground; ask the folks experiencing it themselves. :)

Heating will slay you! The area is pretty dismal but its really beefing up. We were there for 9 years. We lived in Gouverneur, West Carthage and on Drum itself. We liked Carthage but our housing which is no longer sucked but we loved our house on Drum. It was LT. Colonel housing on Bemis Heights, The old cresent woods. Love, loved, loved it there. But for that positive there was a negative. Indian River school district sucked. I had a child in Evans Mills Primary, severely outdated and no real structure. One in the Intermediate school, this was the better of the three but I still disliked them. New school, better programs but the children seemed to not get along amd there was lack of togetherness. I hated the high school!!! Without a doubt the worst high school I have ever seen. The "gang" violence, the teachers, and so many budget cuts your child cannot get the normal high schools experiences. This district is one of the poorest up there. Its mainly military children as to the post restructuring, but tey definetly didnt get the benefits from it. We love Carthage schools but from what I understand they even went downhill alittle but still far better than IRS. Like someone said before its a great place and its what you make of it. I loved it besides the schools and one day hope to go back! The weather has gotten milder over the years and the temps dip to about -35 every now and then but its a different cold. I use to love coming out and seeing families in shorts snowblowing 3 foot of snow at 26 degrees!
