My friend is moving here soon and will live off post, so if anyone knows of neighborhoods that are good to live in and ones to stay out of that would be great! 

One big warning, don't want to see your friend get scammed like the rest of us: DIRECT HER AS FAR AWAY FROM GEARY ESTATES APTS AS SHE CAN GET!! (if she's looking into apartments that is) :) They make their deposits THE LOWEST around, just to get ya suckered in! We have 4 more full months of heck!! 

Agreeing with the Geary Estates comment, they need to be black listed. I had mice constantly, building caught fire about a year ago (my neighbors, because of their workers smoking and tossing cigerettes on their cheap plastic building covers.) My apartment was falling LITERALLY.
I am seriously glad I got out of there before they raised their rent!

Where are Geary Estates? I've heard so many terrible things about them, I'm just curious if I've ever passed them before... 

a few years back the general rule of thumb was do not live anywhere from 7th st up to 18th st but now they have newer houses popping up everywhere like 13th and calhoun st which was always SUPER BAD so who knows lol.
Might even be worth contacting the PD and finding out where the high crime areas are for the city

We just bought a house on Walnut st and our realtor told us the same thing. 

Teec, they are off of I-70, a whole slew of them if your leaving the marshall airfield gate going towards JC, it's right past the gate. I have a friend who lives there, she said that they never fix anything and they just raised the rent like $25 a month for every tenant b/c they put in 1 picnic table and 1 bbq grill.....wow.... 

Yep, gburchett - we can see the beams on our ceiling really bad, I've NEVER lived anywhere where it looks like the ceiling is going to cave in!! We got a call from picerne offering us Colyer Manor or a 4-plex, screw that! We're not giving all out BAH for THAT, we'll suffer until Dec. 1st before we do that (JUST MY OPINION on those two, just now worth it at all...esp compared to other places we could live on post)
