Website for breastfeeding

^^^^^ This site has some info on supplements you can take to get your supply back up if you want to try them.

DollLikeDeceptions --- 14 years ago -

I went to the consultant at the hospital and she said to start pumping every two hours even if you're not getting anything. Then after a few days go to every 4 hours until you get your supply back.

since electric pumps are so expensive i have the handpump one, so it really hurts to evenpump on it i mean not to say so much info but it streaches my nip. up to inches some times i feel if i conitnue to do it, my boobies well look like a dog that jst gave birth you know how they sagg and the nip touches the floor , talk about positive thinking. any recomandastions on a good hand pump or eletric one?

I got a free Medela (?sp) hand pump from the hospital. It worked good for me when I had my daughter.

NatOmy --- 14 years ago -

I also got one but at the time the nurse didnt say it was free so i left it in the brest feeding room. i regret it every day the one that wic gave me is trash!

You can go to the doctor and get a prescription to boost your output. I forgot what it was called though it has been almost 3 years since I went in for it. Other then that lots of fluids and pumping when you are not nursing

There is a teas called "motherĀ“s milk" at the natural store in Manhattan...if u drink that a couple times a day ur milk will be flowing (;

Sally --- 14 years ago -

Invest in a good pump. Medela is what I use. I can pump both sides at once. They are expensive, but well worth the money. I got one on eBay for my sister-in-law that was a bit cheaper. Target in manhattan also carries them. If you have a medical flexible spending account you can use those funds to buy the pump and other supplies for breastfeeding. Like they said above keep pumping even if you don't get any milk. One trick I used was when my baby was hungry I'd pump and little and then let her feed. Since she nursed until I was empty my body started producing more.

I've always heard that if you drink a beer, it will help to produce more milk. Just one every so often, not several a day or even several a week just one every so often.

Taneesa --- 14 years ago -

Mostly a lurker here but wanted to add that eating oatmeal is supposed to help in breastmilk production. I was also going to recommend the Kellymom website, as was mentioned above. Oh, and fenugreek! It's an over-the-counter herbal supplement that is often recommended to aid in production. You can google it to find more information. Also, make sure to drink plenty of water, especially while you're nursing your baby. It helps to stay hydrated. Good luck!

I used fenugreek! Got it at the gnc in the old px. it was like 14 bucks for a huge bottle, and omg it worked awesome! I had milk almost 3 months after i quit taking pills and pumping. The only side effect I got from it (other than all the milk) was it made everything smell like maple syrup. lol sweat, pee, all smelled like maple syrup..Guess it coulda been worse but still akward! And worth it!

i only pump. fenugreek, blessed thistle, teas (not the best taste tho), oatmeal, lots of water, and domperidone, beer (darker the better) or brewers yeast, reglan (by RX). also check out http://community.babycenter.com/groups/a4592405/the_exclusive_pumpersThe Exclusive Pumper that board has helped me ALOt.

I would suggest using the medela pump, yes it is a pretty penny but worth it. what I do is nurse on one side and pump the other and then switch and do the same thing. your child wont go hungry because as they nurse and if you already pump your body will produce more to meet his needs. plus drinking lots of fluids like water and juice help too. if you start to do that and every 2-3 hours you will get more milk. even if you are only pumping out 1 once after he nurses it will add up

My baby is 7 months and I have only pumped the entire time. I gave him a bottle too soon so we had a hard time latching. But the benefits of breastmilk are amazing. If I don't keep up with pumping, my milk slows down. I normally pump every 2 hours. On busy days or days I'm out and about I pump about every 4 hours or as often as possible. I know that seems like alot but I stay at home. When it does slow down I "power pump". That is when you pump for 10 minutes every half hour for a couple of hours. I do that at night when I have the time. After a couple of nights of power pumping and pumping regularly it really helps build it back up. I have a single electric pump that I didn't use if you're interested message me. Hope this helps.

I breastfed and pumped for 3 months with my twins (one would latch the other wouldn't) and then went to exclusively pumping tilll they were 6 months. I bought a Medela double electric pump and it was awesome but I just couldn't keep up with their demands (I was exhausted pumping and feeding around the clock). In addition to those that gave great advice on suppliments(which I also used) and drinking TONS of water, you may want to check for either a rental (if you don't want to buy) or check maybe with WIC to see if you qualify to borrow a pump. I was able to borrow a pump in Colorado from WIC but I don't know if they do that here but figured I would throw it out there.

Rubies87 --- 14 years ago -

The WIC pump that I got in AZ was a madela double electric, it was old style, but it had great features! It also comes apart so you can use it as a hand pump. Maybe not all WIC pumps are the same? but mine was awesome.

Call and make an appointment with the lactation consultant. She can get you another hand pump. Fenugreek and blessed thistle are great, also oatmeal and rootbeer. Drink lots of water and keep talking prenatal vitamins.

The most important thing is put baby to breast. Your breasts will only do what baby tells them to do, so if you skip a nursing to give formula it will decrease milk supply. The first couple weeks baby needs to feed every 1 1/2-3 hours. When they go through a growth spurt they feed very frequently also to increase milk supply.

I would suggest renting a hospital grade breat pump for a few weeks to get it started and as everyone said ten minutes each side every two hours even at night for a few days. Mercy rents them for $55 a month and they pro rate.
