My husband has decided that he wants to live on post now. I understand, because we live in Manhattan and he wants to be closer to work. He put us on the waitlist two months ago and we will not be able to get a place according to Picerne for another 5 months. I find this hard to believe, because I hear stories from people moving on post that have gotten houses offered to them 2-4 weeks after being on the same 2 bedroom list. They were on it well after we were. What's the point of a waitlist is people are just being offered houses left and right that were hardly on the list to begin with? So irritating, considering our lease is up in June and the people I always talk to say sorry, I can't do that. Someone in that office is doing it apparently lol.
I dont understand it either. We moved here from Tx and we got on the wait list BEFORE we left texas and had a house waiting for us when we got here. Now I see where people have to be here BEFORE even getting put on the stupid list. And there are so many empty homes, hell theres one empty across from me thats been empty for several months already! so I dont get it either but I hope you can get a house before your lease is up good luck :)
When we got here last year the wait list for a 2 bedroom was 6-8 months, we were on the list for 4 months and they called us.( we were originally on the wait list for Ellis bt at that time it was 14-16 months list, so we decided to drop it). But a girl I know her husband just had gotten out of AIT and they were offered housing right away. Also a lot depends on bedroom size and rank. I have heard that if you keep calling and bugging them that it helps sometimes.
Wow with all that, it sounds like it may be easier just to rent off post. My husband and I are suppose to be at Riley in September but are going to try and be there end of Julyish. We really would like to live on post but I don't want to have to deal with all that wait list junk...
its a personal prefrence, but we rented off post when we first got here and between, gas, rent, utilities and how long it took my hubby to get on post. It was worth the wait to get on post housing. Now we are 5 minutes from my hubbys motorpool and when he is home relaxing most people are still stuck on trooper trying to get off post.
LoveMyFamily. I would really love to live on post. I am planning on calling the housing office to find out some more info but I am waiting until my husband has his orders so we can be put on the list. But, do you happen to know how long the wait may be for a family of two (just my hubby and I)thats also an E5?
Yeah if you can get on 90 days early it helps a lot. When we got here last year We werent able to get on the list 90 days early because we were given less then 90 dyas notice to PCS
We got on the 5 bedroom list when we got orders because we were told that the 4 bedroom was 8-12 months and the 5 bedroom was 12 months to 3 years. When we got here we had not budged so we opted to go onto the 4 bedroom list and be back dated to the same date. We got on the 4 bedroom list because they reduced the 4 bedroom to 6 months wait at that point. Well 6 months later we still were not offered a house and were still in the hundreds on the waiting list so I called and they told me that it had increased again due to an influx of soldiers coming in and it would be over a year wait again. I was beyond frustrated when I began to hear of other's getting housing and having hardly any wait time. We hated our rental house and our landlord but couldn't move cause we were under lease and even if we broke lease to move into another place then we would have to break lease there to move on post so we stayed put and I just kept bugging them. Right at 8 months of being here (almost a year on the list) they called and offered us a new 4 bedroom house in Forsyth.
I like living on post much better then off. I am lucky to have wonderful neighbors.
Hubby had a family restricted hardship tour before we came to Riley (we have also been in the army for a long time-retiring this year) and we had on post housing as soon as we got here.
The time frame of how long you have been in has nothing to do with the wait list, wish it did because we would have had hardly any wait lol (hubbys been in 18 years). But people coming from overseas, restricted tours and AIT will get first dibs at housing.
The day my husband signed in, he walked into the Picerne and they offered him a choice of 3 homes; they were all in Ellis Heights. He thought all the bedrooms were too small so he turned them down and got back on the list again. That was March 2010, and we are still number 60-something on the waiting list.
I don't think there is honestly any rhyme or reason to the housing wait list here. I've talked to a woman who got a home in Forsyth after waiting 4 days; others said they waited over a year. Then there are people who say that they waited 6 months. I think the wait list gives soldiers and their families a false sense of security, because there really is no rhyme or reason to it; plenty of people told me that they were number 30-something when they checked online, but that they got calls for housing. It's amazing.
when we pcs'd here they backdated our wait list 3 months so we stayed in a hotel for a month & then got a house. THEN after my husband got promoted we moved out of the bad neighborhood but was told it would be a 6 month wait (fine by me). i got 3 calls for 3 other neighborhood that 1st month but i rejected & said forsyth only. it was only 4 months later & we got our call. also i did call every 2-3 weeks to ask what number we were & lil questions.
just a little advice I found out about when we were at fort knox. A medical exception to policy puts you at the top of any list. You get the form, have a dr fill it out and you will be in housing ASAP. We had to wait 4 weeks after getting our address because they were building the house still. My letter was for my knee surgery and a joint disorder I have so it is hard for me to walk stairs but I've seen ppl get it for having a sore back!
A medical exception to policy puts you at the top of any list. For us I didnt even have to get a letter. I gave them our letter that says what to do if I have to go to the ER for my jaw. I explained that I was having surgery 4 days before we were to arrive. Had a house before we got there. We didnt ask for medical home though.
Oh wow, I didn't have to be put on a list. My husband and I decided to move on base and the day I went to the housing office, I got my move in date and my address to move into 30 days from then. The way they explained it to me though was that if your husband is enlisted, there isn't a wait for the 3 bedrooms but there is a wait for the 2. And if you are an officer, there isn't a wait for the 2 but there is for the 3. My husband's an officer so we got a 2 bedroom like basically immediately. Weird. I don't understand how they work at all.

I don't think its fair they make all the houses different anyway...I mean its like saying well your not good enough for this new big house you have to have the small brick ones, etc...its just wrong, and my god a 5br house on post? Didn't know they went that big geeze! Sorry about the wait ladies that really sucks & is stupid of them to do that...if they dont have room for people here they shouldn't bring more here, not fair to you to have to settle somewhere in town if you want post, etc...that sucks, good luck!

Someone needs to put this on a t-shirt, stand on the CG's lawn and pass them out...
The overpopulation is one of the reason so many soldiers get unnecessarily bent over in this area. Junction City ought to change their name to "Pricegougeville".
I can definitely relate to this!! We have been on the waitlist for 6 months now and are still 118 on the list. A guy my husband works with was offered a house after being on the list for 1 week! Same family size and same pay grade..unbelievable! How much a$$ do you have to kiss?
Are the brick houses in Coyler really that bad? Honestly asking because I've never been in one. I know the neighborhood is a little crowded but when I used to live at Fort Knox they said we lived in the "ghetto" and I thought our house was really nice.
Mandy, I have never heard it called anything but Marshall Airfield gate. You can try to find a place in Grandview Plaza or Ogden, they are the closest.
