these are the therms i find more often than not being thrown around and not well thought out before saying/typing it
CRAZY,RETARDED,andPSYHCO. there are more i just cant think of any more at the moment. if you have any you would like to add to the list then be my guest

just to add anytime i hear or read the word crazy i get hurt cause i am "bi-polar' and i have depression and anxiety and have been told i was crazy
i think it is a word that should be thought about before using it to hurt someone we would want someone going around calling us a c^nt.
retard/ed is another word i know way to many children who are autistic or have mental disabilities to be throwing that one around too

Have you heard about "Spread the Word to End the Word"? I had heard about it on Dr. Oz and then we discussed it in more detail in my Teaching as a Career class. It is a fantastic campaign! I had never even thought about it until I read some of the stuff on the site!

i think it really is something that everyone should read more about cause they really do not know the extent of the damage they do to people. yes they are words but so people have grown up so differently and may seem normal to a certainn extent and then boom one outburst and then the hurtful words just flow from the fingers or mouths and then that person is thrown back into remission. side effects suicide, homicide, cutting not to kill or harm oneself but to releive stress. and many more. these hurtful words are thrown around in schools today and they are learned from others and then we wonder what made that child plant a bomb or bring a gun to school or even make a hitlist. but it starts from somwhere and it is up to us adults to teach them how hurtful and wrong it is.

I too have anxiety disorder and it ticks me off when people throw "crazy" around

Cindy --- 14 years ago -

I was actually just thinking about this topic the other day. I use the word "retarded" and I never thought about the word crazy but I can see why it could bother some people.

I would absolutely never call someone who has down syndrome "retarded" and I don't think that having anxiety disorder or bipolar disease makes you "crazy". That's like calling someone with a learning disability "slow". It's ignorant.

I feel like using these words desensitizes us. Like I said I would never use these words to describe someone, you aren't "crazy" just because you have a mental illness, but the storm the other day was pretty "crazy". I have a "crazy" day of packing to do, because I'm moving in a week. I don't think that's equating anything to having depression or anxiety or any spectrum of mental illnesses.

I am sorry that you have dealt with some ignorance in your life, but everyone has their triggers (have you seen the movie Sybil? Her triggers were purple and green.) and we can't account for everything that could set someone off.

I do wish you luck in your treatment, I know treating mental disorders can be an uphill battle sometimes, and it's a life long battle for most.

Since I used the word 'crazy' in a post recently, I figured I can at least explain why I did...because I know the OP on this thread saw that. I did think about it before I used it and I don't use the word often. I would never use that word to describe someone who has any kind of mental health condition. I see someone with a mental health condition as someone who has a disease, some controllable, others not.

I consider someone to be acting 'crazy' when they are of sound mind, know what they are doing, can justify right from wrong and do it anyway. I used the word 'crazy' and it was directed at someone who I asked to stop private messaging me over and over and over and she kept on messaging and posting, etc. So yes, in my eyes, she was acting crazy. I don't equate that term at all with someone with a health condition at all.

I'm sorry if you read it that way, or if you have ever been called crazy because of your condition.

Well I for one use words like "crazy","retarded" and "lame" all the time .If I say something is "crazy" does that make it so?? Not hardly and to compare words like"crazy" to the word c**nt is a stretch, dont ya think? I think people get way to bent out of shape over the smallest things. Its time to lighten up and not take things so literal.but thats just me

I personally dont like when people use the "retarded" word because mostly they are referring to a persons actions or saying your so retarded or you tard! ect...I use insane, crazy, and such when when Im making talking about situations ..not people. That was totally insane!.. or Did you see that craziness. so for me it is how its directed and if its meant to describe a person or just a situation. the same with lame, stupid. I have never thought about the word psycho since when i hear it the movie comes to mind and i dont hear that word threw out there often. now i do think that word sometimes when i have to deal with my mother but hey who dont have moments where they have had an unpleasant thought about them at one time or another in their life. :)

I use crazy. I've even dealt with my family actually being crazy. It doesnt offend me. Everyone is a little crazy, I've just embraced mine so the word doesnt offend me. I usually use crazy if I say it to someone if they've done something crazy...Like "I went shopping all day with 2 kids today" I'll then say "your crazy." Or something like that.

Im sure there is more but as much as i dont like it ..people will still use them to describe situations or joke around to others. I know im sensitive to that word so whenever it gets said it gets my attention but lots of adjectives can be taken negatively depending on a persons own health or background. I just try not to take it personally since people are from all over and talk differently and use different words for expression.

If you want to see someone go bananas, use the word "retarded" in front of me. I despise it. Yet--even with all the mental health blocks I had to take to get my credentialing to teach special needs children--I use the words "crazy" and "insane" when I think they apply.

classylady --- 14 years ago -

using in situation are completely different than using them towards a person. and when used toward a person you never really know what mentall damage are doing. you may think you are the only one saying it to one person but what if that one person hears it so much from their home life that your one comment could throw them over the edge.
there are always other words and phrases that could take place of those insensitive words. like i said we also need to teach our children this wether you know it or not it does leak into their little minds and then they take it too far. the school system can only do so much about this it is really up to us adults to set an example

and 19dwifey please dont think this topic was made because of you i did it because i have seen/heard this time and time again. this not aimed towards anyone by anymeans. i can honestly i have even been guilty of this too. but i just thought it should be something that should be brought up and considered and i know that most of you are on other boards so i thought that maybe that this is something that can be brought up in those too. im sorry if you think it was aimed at you.
